MooseHead

Took this pic 2day @ a taxidermist in Grenville. Pretty cool.

*Now that im home and not texting in a blog post I can add that this guy was really good. Bears, fish, fox, rabbits. Bears biting fish. everything. So since we were there and knew one of the other guys at the shop that day we got a brief tour. My boss was picking up a rainbow trout that he got this past summer. The fish are basically skinned and the skin is applied over a foam body. The head is moulded and cast into plastic as it would fall apart. It is all painted, shellacked and mounted. There is a salt table to dry out the hides. and plenty of bond-o, and epoxies are used. Its quite and artistic endeavour and the difference between a good taxidermist and a shitty one can be enormous.

  4. GOOD LORD MAN!

You have no idea how many people I have told that I want a moose head for my home decor. It is one of my dreams really.

But, it should be from the proper channels (i.e. a responsible hunter and a responsible taxidermist). Since I am not a hunter and really don't know any hunters, I am pretty much resigned to my fate, being mooseheadless.

But, at least I can look longingly at this photo now.

  7. That looks so freaking real !
I had my one and only experience of being in a taxidermist's shop in France. In the firdt minutes, I almost keeled over with the stench of the formaldyhide/ whatever it is they they preserve the animals.

But, I do agree, it takes talent to do that... and a strong stomach too !
