Graffiti: Its Art.

This morning I walked past the Asylum in Portland and saw that the graffiti art was changed recently on the rear wall. This is a great example of graffiti art. It is uniform in its theme, mood and color. Stephen King should be proud of this one. A nice portriat of him, the clown of It, the cat of Pet Cemetary and a bloody Carrie are all represented. I couldn't get Carrie in the shot, no light.

Hump Day Stroll

Portland can be a damn interesting city. Not only did I walk through the Wednesday Farmers Market, complete with artists and musicians, I was asked for spare change by too many.

But, However *shaking finger* I did come across some new graffiti art and the PETA fruits were out against exotic animal skins.
My temptation to go grab a couple of hot dogs and shoot the shit with the pretty tarts handing out flyers was short lived. I had hot dogs yesterday.

Grafiti Art

Near my job place in Portland a local club allows some graffiti art on their back wall. These guys have some serious talent. Here is a small portion of the wall:

My critique would be to work on composure and structure. Less words and faces scattered all over the 'canvas' and more uniform themes would really make this art stand up. But what the fuck do I know?

Light-en it up.

Yesterday I was foolin' around with my digital camera and found that it can do 8 second exposures.
After it got dark I shut off the lights and set up the long exposure mode, practiced waving my arms around and took these pictures.

The left one I simply wrote my name, backwards in cursive using my cellphone.

The one to the right I just tried to outline my body using two small single LED book reading lights.

Fun with photography. Whaddyah think?

Art Monday

Here is a very recent drawing by Steve Dean.
Tentative title is 'Blue Line'.
For the non-locals the Blue Line is one of the train lines in Boston-Metro. This line starts in Revere Mass.

Yesterday was earth day. I didn't have any post in mind so I didn't really do anything topical about it. Then I remembered that while attending art school SteveDean had done a drawing/ political cartoon for the school news paper for earth day. Here it is:

Today is Friday and it feels like a good day to post a little artwork. So as usual I like to post stuff done by Steve Dean who's work will be hanging at Breaking New Grounds on Exchange Street in Portland, Maine during the Month of March.

This piece of work is titled 'ALIENS'. I don't remember the size, probably about 8"x11" It was composed with ink and watercolor.

Art Tuesday

Its Tuesday and if my analytical data is telling me anything, its that Tuesday is my biggest traffic day of the week. So for today I post art. we all need a little more art in our lives. And as usual I will post another piece from Steve Dean.

Here is one of a series done by Steve Dean on pages of Jim Morrison's poem book The Lords.

I particularly like the poem because it remains relevant, maybe even more so, today. Comparing the worship of our entertainers to spiritual leaders.

Perhaps this is where some of the faith in the world is being funneled off to?

My plans to hike with my friend were thwarted by high gas prices and crappy weather. So instead we took my dogs for a walk at a wildlife preserve nearby. About half way through I took this picture. In life it looked like a Winslow Homer painting...my favorite American artist. Well, beside Steve Dean. So here is it....

We did it! The first piece of Steve Dean art (shown right) sold to a stranger. EVER! The guy who purchased it has even asked about commission work and told us of an online magazine where he is chief editor.

So the ultimate situation is that Steve can start drawing for this guy or people he knows, get paid, get national exposure...get paid more and get famous. The cool thing is that though some email correspondence we discovered several coincidences that make this all the more intriguing and exciting... because there are no coincidences in life. Only actions that spur actions that spur results.

Though of course what no artist wants is get to this point of this..
